The Weight-Performance Dilemma in EV Battery Systems
For new energy electric vehicles to truly replace internal combustion engine vehicles, extending driving range remains an urgent challenge. As the "heart" of electric vehicles, the power battery system's energy density has become a primary focus of R&D efforts. However, battery boxes—the structural carriers that house and protect battery packs—are typically heavy components with significant energy consumption. Furthermore, under complex road conditions, batteries face risks of vibration, impact, and compression that can cause internal short circuits, fires, or even explosions. Traditional battery boxes also suffer from inadequate waterproofing, poor sealing leading to leakage, and insufficient heat dissipation.
To address these interconnected challenges, the Tenglong Automotive engineering team has developed a lightweight, impact-resistant, leak-proof battery box specifically designed for electric vehicles.
Engineering Excellence: Four-Layer Protection Architecture
This project introduces a comprehensive battery box design that balances weight reduction with structural integrity and environmental protection:
Sealed Protection System: A sealing cover creates an airtight seal with the box body. The battery is housed within a placement frame inside the box, protecting it from external moisture ingress and effectively preventing water leakage and electrical leakage.
▸ Moisture Absorption Technology: The placement frame is filled with activated carbon particles that actively absorb moisture and gases generated during battery operation, preventing condensation from penetrating the battery cells.
▸ Thermal Management Solution: Clamping plates and heat dissipation fins work together to conduct internally generated heat to the exterior of the box, ensuring the battery operates at normal ambient temperatures and effectively extending battery service life.
▸ Lightweight Impact Structure: Composite laminate materials are used to design the battery box's load-bearing beams and overall structure. A novel bottom support plate is engineered based on the gravity load distribution of internal structural components on the lower cover, enhancing lower cover rigidity while minimizing weight.
Key Innovations for Safety and Durability
Mass Reduction with Strength Retention: The battery box achieves significantly lower weight compared to conventional designs while maintaining excellent corrosion resistance, electrical insulation, high strength, and leak-proof performance.
▸ Crash Performance Compliance: The structural design fully meets battery box collision performance requirements, protecting both the battery pack and vehicle occupants during impact events.
▸ Extended Battery Life: By integrating moisture protection, leak prevention, and active heat dissipation, the system substantially improves battery operating conditions, directly contributing to longer battery lifespan and enhanced vehicle safety.
Proven Results and Intellectual Property
The project is backed by a national invention patent: "A Leak-Proof Battery Box for New Energy Vehicles" (Patent No. ZL201810502754.5). The patented design has been successfully implemented in the company's ambulance product line, where it has effectively extended battery service life under demanding operational conditions.
The final evaluation committee confirmed that the project successfully delivers a lightweight, corrosion-resistant, insulating, high-strength, and leak-proof battery box that enhances battery longevity and increases overall vehicle safety.
Commitment to Holistic Battery Protection
This project underscores Xiangyang Tenglong Automotive's commitment to comprehensive battery safety. By integrating this lightweight, impact-resistant, leak-proof battery box into our vehicle lineup—including ambulances, buses, and logistics vehicles—we ensure that our customers benefit from extended battery life, reduced energy consumption from heavy components, and enhanced protection for both vehicle and occupants.
